Why the Pool Environment is Different
Pool areas can place different demands on artificial grass compared with a typical garden. The surface may be exposed to water, pool chemicals, strong sunlight, frequent foot traffic and repeated wetting and drying. Saltwater pools can introduce additional considerations, particularly for properties close to the coast. This doesn't mean that every standard artificial grass product will automatically fail around a pool.
The important point is to choose a product whose construction and specifications are appropriate for the environment in which it will be used. Drainage is equally important. Water needs to move effectively through the finished installation rather than remaining on the surface or collecting underneath it.
What to Look for in a Pool-Area Product
Artificial grass selected for pool areas should offer characteristics suited to the demands of the application. Rather than assuming one type of "pool grass" suits every property, we look at the application and the manufacturer's specifications when recommending a product.
UV Resistance
Important where the grass is exposed to strong sunlight for long periods on the Costa Blanca.
Drainage
The surface will regularly receive water from swimmers, cleaning and rainfall — it must drain quickly and completely.
Fibre Construction
Should be appropriate for the amount of foot traffic the pool area receives throughout the season.
Surface Feel
An important consideration when people will regularly walk barefoot across the grass around the pool.
The Installation Matters Too
Even a suitable product needs to be installed correctly. The underlying preparation, levels and drainage all contribute to how the finished pool area performs.
The installation needs to account for the pool surround, coping, steps, drains, access points and any changes in level. Where existing paving is being retained, its condition, levels and drainage need to be assessed before deciding how the grass should be installed. Appearance and Design
Artificial grass can make a significant difference to the appearance of a pool area. The combination of green grass, swimming pool water and Mediterranean outdoor space creates a clean, cohesive finish that works particularly well with villas, terraces and outdoor living areas.
It can soften areas dominated by tiles, concrete or paving and create a more comfortable transition between the pool and the rest of the garden. For holiday homes and rental properties, the consistent appearance is particularly attractive — and homeowners value the practical outdoor area without the mowing and watering required to keep natural grass green.
