Why Seams Become Visible or Lift
Seams can become visible, open or lift for several reasons:
Original installation
If the grass was not correctly aligned, joined or secured when originally installed, the seam may become more noticeable over time.
Adhesive or joining materials
The materials used to join the grass can deteriorate or fail, particularly where the installation has experienced significant use or exposure.
Movement underneath
Movement or settlement in the underlying base can place stress on the seam and cause it to open.
Heavy use
Frequently used areas can place additional pressure on joins, particularly around entrances, pool areas and other high-traffic sections.
Age and wear
Older installations can develop worn or deteriorated seams over time.
How Seam Repairs Work
The repair process depends on the condition of the existing seam. Where appropriate, the affected area can be carefully opened, prepared and re-joined using suitable joining materials. Correct alignment is important. The grass fibres need to follow the same direction and the edges need to meet cleanly to achieve the best possible result. The condition of the surrounding grass also matters.
Older artificial grass may have changed in appearance through exposure and use, so a repaired seam may not always disappear completely. An experienced specialist should assess the seam before carrying out the repair and explain what result can realistically be achieved.
When Seam Repair May Not Be Sufficient
Sometimes the visible seam is only a symptom of a larger problem. If the underlying surface has moved, settled or become unstable, simply repairing the join may not provide a lasting solution. In these circumstances, the underlying issue may need to be addressed before the seam can be repaired properly. If the grass is extensively worn or several seams have failed, replacing a larger section may also provide a better result. We assess the condition of the installation and the likely cause of the problem before recommending a repair. If a seam can be repaired, we'll tell you.
