BBQ and Fire Pit Damage
Hot coals, sparks and direct heat can melt or scorch artificial grass fibres. Even a small amount of intense heat can cause localised damage, while a barbecue or fire pit positioned too close to the surface can affect a larger area. Any outdoor heat source should be positioned appropriately away from artificial grass.
Cigarette Burns
Cigarettes can cause small, localised areas of melted or scorched fibre. Where the damage is limited, a patch repair may be possible without replacing the surrounding installation.
Garden Machinery and Heat Damage
Hot equipment and other sources of direct heat can melt or scorch artificial grass fibres. Garden machinery and equipment can also cause damage if hot components, exhausts or other heated parts come into contact with the grass.
The extent of the damage depends on the heat source, how close it was to the surface and how long the grass was exposed. For this reason, strimmers, lawn equipment, machinery and other sources of significant heat should be kept away from artificial grass.
When Burn Damage Can Be Repaired
Small, localised burns can often be repaired by carefully removing the damaged section and installing a suitable piece of matching artificial grass. Cigarette burns and minor areas of heat damage may be suitable for this type of repair. The final result depends on the condition of the surrounding grass, the size and position of the damaged area and whether a suitable match is available. Artificial grass that has been exposed to the sun for several years may also have a different appearance from a new replacement piece.

When Replacement May Be Necessary
More extensive burn damage may make a small patch repair impractical. If a large area has been affected, or several areas are damaged, replacing a larger section may provide a more consistent result. In some cases, complete replacement may be the more practical option, particularly where the installation is older, the original grass is no longer available or there are other problems with the existing installation. It is also important to address the cause of the damage. If reflected sunlight is concentrating heat onto the same area, for example, repairing the grass without addressing the source could result in the damage happening again.
