What to Do If Artificial Grass Has Been Poorly Installed

A poorly installed artificial grass surface can develop problems that affect its appearance, drainage and long-term performance. If something doesn't look right, it doesn't necessarily mean the entire installation needs replacing. The first step is to understand what has happened and whether the issue can be repaired.

Signs of Poor Installation

  • Poorley or incorrectly joined seams
  • Edges which are not securred or incorrectly securred
  • Water collecting or drainage problems
  • An uneven or sinking surface
  • Inconsistent fibre direction
  • Inconsistent joins
  • Areas that move or feel unstable underfoot

Why Poor Installation Happens

The preparation underneath the grass is an important part of the installation. If the underlying surface isn't stable, appropriately levelled or able to deal with water effectively, problems can eventually become visible in the artificial grass above it. Other issues can result from incorrect joining, inadequate edge fixing, unsuitable materials or installation methods, or simply a lack of experience with the particular requirements of the property. Costa Blanca properties can present their own challenges, including existing paving, slopes, compacted ground, builders' rubble and different drainage conditions.

This is why the installation needs to be considered as a complete system rather than simply laying the grass over the existing surface.

What Can Be Done

The appropriate solution depends on the problem and the condition of the existing installation. Some issues, such as a loose edge, damaged seam or localised area of damage, may be suitable for repair without replacing the entire surface. Where the underlying preparation has moved, settled or is causing ongoing drainage or stability problems, more extensive work may be necessary. In some cases, this can mean lifting the existing grass, correcting the underlying problem and re-laying it. In others, replacement may provide the better long-term result.
